If you’re the proud owner of a new notebook or new lcd screen you want to have the screen work best. Many lcd screen owners don’t know that Microsoft made a special tool for it. With Cleartype you get the best out of your screen, but even better you can adjust the screen settings to your own preferations.

As everybody will know a screen consists of pixels. If you zoom in on a character you see sharp edges and not round ones. Cleartype will soften these edges to make them look more round. This way it’s more pleasant to read text on your screen.

There are 2 ways to install Cleartype:
1. Go to http://www.microsoft.com/typography/ClearTypeInfo.mspx and use the Cleartype Webinterface. You’re then asked to install. If you did this check the, then click Next and go through the following steps. Pick the best one out of the available images and press the Finish button.

2. The other method is to download and install ClearType Tuner PowerToy.

Ofcourse you can try Cleartype with a classic CRT monitor, but the results won’t be as good as with LCD screens.

If you think the results aren’t quite what you expect them to be you could installClearTweak. ClearTweak is developed to manipulate the Cleartype settings. With a slider you can set the contrast. ClearTweak advises you to holder the slider at 1000.
