Get the most out of Google searchengine with our tips. Google, though it’s an impressive searchengine is far from intelligent. It searches for the words you provide. So you have to help Google:
1. Don’t search with just one word but with at least 2 or 3 words.
2. Think in answers, don’t ask questions. This seems weird, but if you imagine the answer to your question you will help Google to find it for you. E.g. if you want to know what the capital of Germany is, don’t ask ‘what is the capital of Germany’ but instead ‘capital of germany is’. Now this is a simple question, but try it for yourself and see the differences in outcome.
3. Use quotes “……”. Using quotes forces Google to use the exact sequence of the words you type in. Try searching bycicles in beijing and “bycicles in beijing”. In the first case you get 900.000+ results, in the latter case you get 170.000+ results.
4. Using dots in case you don’t know exact figures. When did the Berlin Wall fell? Your best guess is somewhere between 1985 and 1990. You type in “Berlin wall” fell 1985…1990 and look at the answers.
5. Google.com gives you other answers than your localized Google. To use google.com despite cookie settings, use: http://google.com/ncr. NCR stands for no country redirect.
6. Verify the sources. Answers from .edu (universities) sites will be more trusted. You can force Google to search in .edu sites as follows. Type in your question and after that ’site:edu’ (without the hyphens).
7. If you want to filter out words use: - (minus). Let’s say your looking for A4 paper and not Audi A4. Type in A4 -audi.
8. Use the Web options and Advanced search options:
With the button Show options you can search with date ranges and other options. With advanced search you can search within documents e.g. document types like .doc or .pdf.
9. Search in English because that gives you the most answers if needed. With translate.google.com you can translate your question into English.
10. Searching maps or images? Use respectively maps.google.com and images.google.com
Happy searching!
